Join us on Tuesday 15 July, 2025 as we welcome Professor Dominic Wyse to deliver a Visiting Scholar Lecture.Helping young children learn to read and write remains one of the highest priorities for nations, states and schools worldwide. Teachers attend to these priorities as part of their daily work as professionals. Periodically, strong voices in the media and in politics advocate for particular approaches to the teaching of early reading, drawing selectively on research evidence to support policy mandates and teaching solutions. This talk will show that robust research identifies the importance of connecting phonics instruction with the development of reading and writing. New frontiers lie in connections made between teaching reading and teaching writing. Note: This event will not be recorded. Due to venue limitations, please only register for a ticket if you are sure to be attending in person. Date: Tuesday 15 July, 2025 Dominic Wyse is Professor of Early Childhood and Primary Education at the Institute of Education (IOE) University College London (UCL) and Founding Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Pedagogy (0 to 11 Years) (HHCP). Dominic’s research includes a sustained contribution to effective teaching of reading and writing particularly with primary age children. ‘The Balancing Act Initiative’ has attracted unprecedented attention nationally and internationally including by teachers, researchers and policy makers in Australia, England, Canada, China, New Zealand, the USA, Wales and by the European Commission. Dominic developed the theory of teaching, The Double Helix of Reading and Writing with his co-author Charlotte Hacking. This theory, its evidence base and related teaching practices can be found in the book, “The Balancing Act: An evidence-based approach to teaching phonics, reading and writing”, and in the award winning research paper “Decoding, Reading and Writing: The Double Helix Theory of Teaching.” |
