It has been a significant semester here at Luther College. One of those periods where you pause briefly and realise just how much has happened, and how much growth can occur when a community shares a clear sense of purpose.
Our Student Leadership team chose Vision as the theme for the year, and looking back across the semester, it's hard to imagine a more perfect lens through which to reflect on everything our community has achieved.
This year has already brought us a new state-of-the-art building, a stunning student production, a celebratory community event, and a significant arts showcase. Each one a reflection of the culture our community is building together, and each one, in its own way, a vision made real.
Opening our Centre for Creativity and Innovation
Earlier this year we officially opened our new Centre for Creativity and Innovation, the largest building project in Luther College’s history.
The CCI brings together The Arts, Technologies and multidisciplinary learning in one connected environment. We marked the occasion with a whole school celebration in the Quad, followed by an official opening ceremony later that evening led by our Board Chair Helen Suke, College Pastor Nathan Hedt and members of our wider community.
What has pleased me most is how quickly the building has become part of daily life. Students are already using the spaces in exactly the way we had hoped, collaboratively, creatively and with genuine curiosity. You can feel the energy in the building.
Importantly, the CCI was never simply about constructing a new facility. It was about creating the conditions for future focused learning. Spaces that allow students to move between disciplines, think differently, work hands on and engage with complexity in authentic ways.
For schools undertaking similar projects, I know how significant these projects can be, and I would always welcome the opportunity to connect and share our experience.
Japan Arts Immersion Tour Exhibition
Fittingly, the first major event held in the CCI was an exhibition featuring work from students involved in our Japan Arts Immersion Tour.
Students across visual arts, media, theatre, music and design travelled through Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Nara, exploring both traditional and contemporary artistic practice. Throughout the tour they created “Janku” journals filled with sketches, reflections, collected materials and creative responses.
The resulting exhibition was extraordinary. Large scale artworks, immersive installations, photography, animation and performance pieces transformed the new building and showcased the depth of thinking and creativity that can emerge when students are immersed in rich experiences beyond the classroom.
It was also a reminder of the power of interdisciplinary learning. When students are given the opportunity to connect ideas, cultures and forms of expression, the outcomes are often far beyond what we might traditionally expect.
The Little Mermaid - Six Sold-out Shows
Our production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid was another standout moment of the semester.
Across six sold out performances, audiences witnessed not only remarkable student talent, but the result of months of discipline, teamwork and commitment from students and staff alike.
School productions are extraordinary learning experiences. Yes, audiences see what happens on stage, but they do not always see the rehearsal hours, the problem solving backstage, the leadership within student crews, the persistence required from musicians, or the courage it takes for young people to step into performance in the first place.
The arts continue to play such an important role in forming confident, capable and collaborative young people, and productions like this remind us why creative experiences matter in schools.
Mother's Day Breakfast
One of the most joyful mornings of the semester was our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast, where more than 550 mothers, grandmothers and students gathered together as a community.
This year’s guest speaker was Samantha Gash, endurance athlete, social entrepreneur, World Vision Goodwill Ambassador and mother.
Samantha spoke with honesty about resilience, identity and purpose, but what resonated most strongly was her reflection on the quiet work people do when nobody is watching. The habits, decisions and small acts that gradually shape character over time.
It was a message that connected powerfully across generations and one that felt particularly relevant in a school community. As educators and parents, so much of what we do is unseen in the moment, yet influential over time.
As the semester draws to a close, I am reminded again that schools are built through the accumulation of moments and experiences.
A rehearsal after school.
A conversation at a breakfast table.
A student taking a creative risk.
A new building slowly filling with life and learning.
These moments matter because together they shape culture, belonging and possibility for young people.
I hope your own communities have found similar moments of energy, purpose and optimism across the semester. As always, I value the opportunity to learn from colleagues across our LEVNT network and to continue sharing ideas together.
