Spotlight – Good News Lutheran College, Tarneit and Mambourin

2026-05-07

One College, Two Campuses, One Community: How GNLC is Growing with Purpose

When Good News Lutheran College opened its doors in 1997 with just 24 primary students in Tarneit, few could have predicted the journey ahead. Nearly three decades later, the college is home to more than 2,000 students across two campuses, serving families from Prep through to Year 12 in one of Melbourne's fastest growing corridors.

That growth has been deliberate over the years, and with Community as the college's focus theme for 2026, this year's Harmony Day celebrations offered a powerful snapshot of what that theme looks like in practice.

Both campuses, together

Students from both the Tarneit and Mambourin campuses came together for a single Harmony Day celebration. It was a milestone that reflected not just the cultural diversity of the GNLC community but the maturity of a two-campus college that is growing into its identity.

The event featured student performances, cultural food trucks, and community activities, all designed to acknowledge the backgrounds and traditions represented across the college. With families from across Melbourne's western suburbs, the GNLC community spans dozens of cultural heritages, making Harmony Day one of the most meaningful dates on the college calendar.

What made this year's celebration different was the intentional decision to bring both campuses together as one community. It was a natural expression of the college's 2026 theme, Community, which has shaped how GNLC approaches everything from classroom culture to whole-of-college events this year. For Mambourin families, many of whom joined the college as the newer campus continues to grow, it was a powerful moment of inclusion and belonging. For Tarneit families, it was a chance to see the breadth of the college they have been part of for years.

Managing infrastructure demands alongside enrolment growth

Behind the celebrations sits a more complex story; one of careful planning to ensure that the college's physical infrastructure keeps pace with the demand for places.

The Mambourin Campus, situated within the Mambourin Estate, is being developed progressively through a long-term capital works program. New buildings and facilities are being delivered in stages, with the campus adding year levels each year as the infrastructure comes online. This phased approach allows the college to grow sustainably rather than overextending, ensuring that every student has access to quality learning environments from their first day.

At the Tarneit Campus, the challenge is different. As the established campus with over 1,500 students, the focus is on maintaining and upgrading existing facilities while supporting the operational demands of a large and busy school community. Investments in technology, learning spaces, and student support infrastructure are ongoing.

The college's approach to managing this growth reflects a broader philosophy and its 2026 Community theme: growth is not just about numbers, it is about ensuring that every family, whether at Tarneit or Mambourin, receives the same quality of education, care, and community experience. Building community across two campuses at different stages of development requires intentionality, and that commitment to consistency is central to how GNLC operates.

Grounded in values, united by community

At the heart of both campuses is a Christ-centred education grounded in the college's four core values: Grace, Respect, Integrity and Courage. These values shape everything from how teachers engage with students to how the wider college community connects and supports one another.

Good News Lutheran College continues to invest in the areas that matter most to families: student wellbeing, quality teaching, and a community where every student is known and supported. In a year defined by the theme of Community, GNLC is demonstrating that growing bigger does not mean growing apart. It means growing together.
