Term 2 has been full of events, learning and excitement at both Geelong Lutheran College campuses: St John’s Newtown and Armstrong Creek.
Here’s an update on what our students, staff and community have been up to this term.
Commemorating ANZAC Day
Week 1 of term was a moment of reflection for students and staff at both campuses for ANZAC Day.
At GLC St John’s Newtown, Member for Geelong Christine Couzens MP, City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr Stretch Kontelj OAM, and a parent in the Defence Force joined students laying wreathes, with performances by our choirs, a bugle and bagpipes.
GLC Armstrong Creek Primary Students also made wreathes, with representatives from each class coming forward to place theirs on the stage during the campus’ service.
GLC German Students Return
Seventeen adventurous German learners in Years 10 and 11 at GLC Armstrong Creek returned in April from their three-week exchange program with our sister school, Gymnasium Trossingen in south-west Germany.
GLC students attended classes and learned about the German school system, participated in different excursions, immersed themselves in the German language and culture and, most importantly, made many new friends.
Saying goodbye at the end was made easier, knowing that their new German friends will return the visit and spend Easter 2026 with us at GLC.
Mary Poppins Jr. wows audiences!
What a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious time our Mary Poppins Jr. cast and crew had at the Geelong Arts Centre performing in front of over 1,700 people across four shows.
The talented group of students and staff put in a lot of time and effort to put on our College production for 2025, and it was practically perfect in every way. Well done in particular to Mr Gollasch, Miss Marsh, Mr Dinse and Ms Stevens for their leadership and vision for this production.
A big thank you to our staff and parent volunteers, the Geelong Arts Centre team, and generous Corporate, Business & Community Sponsors for making this production possible, and to everyone who came along.
New Head of Primary at GLC St John’s Newtown
We were very pleased to last month announce the appointment of the new GLC St John’s Newtown Head of Primary: Mr Luke Symes.
Mr Symes is returning to Australia from Sweden where he has served as the Principal of two international schools. Prior to this he was the Campus Principal at Bacchas Marsh Grammar (Woodlea Campus) from 2013 – 2021. Luke shares confidently about his personal faith journey.
He is looking forward to working within the Lutheran School sector and sharing God’s word with students, staff and families. Mr Symes will begin at GLC on Monday 28 July. We wish him God’s richest blessings as he undertakes this role.
Leading Chapel
Over the course of the year, each of our Primary classes lead a Chapel service. In Week 7, 6BL from our St John’s Newtown campus shared a creative and meaningful message all about reconciliation. They reminded us that, no matter what, we can be made right with God through Jesus. To help bring the message to life, the students acted out different stories in a fun courtroom-style setup. There were judges and lawyers – all showing how God forgives and welcomes us back because of Jesus. 6BL did a fantastic job, and we’re proud of how confidently and clearly they shared this important message.
Construction underway on latest builds!
The temporary fencing is up, and the sites have been cleared for the Armstrong Creek campus’ next capital projects: a new resource centre and oval.
The new resource centre, Concordia, will include separate Primary and Secondary library spaces, two classrooms, meeting rooms and a staff lounge over two-stories. The Secondary library will connect seamlessly to the Year 11 & 12 Centre, Ngarrwa, by a skybridge on the second floor.
On the other side of Ngarrwa, the campus’ new oval is taking shape. The oval will more than double the size of the campus’ outdoor green space and provide a full-size AFL oval to complement the existing soccer, volleyball fields and basketball/netball courts.
