Have you been thinking about Social and Emotional Learning?
I certainly have, in my quest to learn more I tuned in to one of the recent Learning Future podcast episodes.
Dr Stephanie Jones Professor in Child Development and Education and Director of the EASEL Lab at the Harvard Graduate School chats with Louka Parry about creating a new model for Social and Emotional Learning in schools that inverts the focus in this area to better serve students particularly in a post pandemic world.
There were many A-ha moments for me in this podcast. I would love you to have a listen and then we can continue the conversation.
Dr Stephanie Jones talks about how we might shift our gaze in education from the places we assume it should go or where it has gone previously to take a more ecological view of how we learn in ecosystems and when one part such as social and emotional development is out of balance then other parts will be affected.
How do we honour wellbeing and develop emotional agility while still encouraging our young people to be willing to struggle or perhaps grapple with challenge?
How do we ensure that children are ready and able to grapple with deep learning?
Are we developing self control or are we developing compliance to adult demand?
Are you a Restorative Practice school? Listen out for her mention of RP- it’s important!
Put it on for your drive home!
