Devotion – Ordinary People, Extraordinary Things

2023-07-27

My commute to work has recently lengthened. Sometimes, I think negatively about my new, longer route, but, I have been using these drives to listen to new worship music. I’ve been getting through quite a lot, and my ‘Fav Worship Songs’ playlist now continually grows. One of my newer favourites is ‘Nobody’ by Casting Crowns. I’ve put the lyrics below as well as some reflections.

LYRICS/LINK

Why You ever chose me

Has always been a mystery

All my life, I’ve been told I belong

At the end of a line

With all the other Not-Quites

With all the Never-Get-It-Rights

But it turns out they are the ones You were looking for

All this time

‘Cause I’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody

All about Somebody who saved my soul

Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing

I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus

I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus

Moses had stage fright

And David brought a rock to a sword fight

You picked twelve outsiders nobody would’ve chosen

And You changed the world

Well, the moral of the story is

Everybody’s got a purpose

So when I hear that devil start talking to me, saying

“Who do you think you are?” I say

I’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody

All about Somebody who saved my soul

Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing

I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus

I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus

So let me go down, down, down in history

As another blood-bought faithful member of the family

And if they all forget my name, well, that’s fine with me

I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus

So let me go down, down, down in history (Go down in history)

As another blood-bought faithful member of the family (It’s all I ever wanna be)

And if they all forget my name, well, that’s fine with me

I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus, yeah!

I’m just a nobody (Nobody)

Trying to tell everybody

All about Somebody

Who saved my soul (Oh, saved my, saved my soul)

Ever since You rescued me

You gave my heart a song to sing (You gave me a song to sing)

I’m living for the world to see

Nobody but Jesus (Nobody but You, Lord)

I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus

It can be so easy to feel unqualified for what God might be calling us into. A close friend recently reminded me that once a call comes, it doesn’t stop, it merely gets louder and clearer until we decide to take the leap. Equally, it can be difficult to see the larger picture of how what we are doing daily is adding to the work of the Gospel.

Consistently throughout the Bible, God uses broken, ordinary humans for extraordinary things, to carry out His grand plan for us all. ‘Nobody’ reminds us of David bringing a rock to a sword fight, and an eclectically chosen twelve apostles and Moses getting stage fright. These along with many examples throughout the Bible remind us of our purpose, that as believers we are here to further God’s plan.

As daunting as it might be, God calls His ordinary people, to extraordinary things in Him. Personally, I find it indescribably comforting to lean on the truth that despite my human failings, God is using me as an agent of the Gospel.

In Philippians 2:13 (ESV) we read:

For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

I hope that this reflection on a catchy song can bring comfort to you also, and that throughout this week you feel the assurance that God is working through you, no matter how ordinary you might feel.
