Devotion – Just Say ‘Yes!’

2024-02-22

In Chapter 14 of John’s gospel, Jesus says, ‘Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.’

Have you ever thought about the gravity this statement? Did Jesus really say that we will do greater things than He did during his time on Earth? Was he talking about silencing storms, feeding large gatherings of people and healing physical and spiritual ailments? Don’t get me wrong, I do like the idea of turning water into wine, but… really?

There are accounts throughout the Bible where people called upon God and great things were done. We could quibble over whether God did great things through people, or if people did great things through God. The bottom line is, great things were done. And great things continue to be done today. Healings, signs, wonders, prophesies…

Steven Furtick writes: ‘What we call a miracle is really just the right combination of your ordinary ingredients and God’s extraordinary expertise. When God’s super collides with your natural, sparks will fly.’

So let’s be ordinary people who are willing to do great things. Listen for God’s call. Be open to it. It might be through a loud clap of thunder. Or it might be through a gentle whisper. And, when you hear the call – not later, not when the feeling is right, not when you have more time on your hands, not when you have more resources at your disposal – right at that moment that you hear the call, say, ‘Here I am! Send me!’ Or keep it simple and just say, ‘Yes!’

Heavenly Father, what are you asking from me today? Remove all barriers that hold me back from saying yes to you. Fill me with a faith that moves mountains. Bless me with the ability to abandon worldly constraints and equip me with boldness and courage to do great things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
